Lawyers for Human Rights has scored a first-round victory for the rights of eight children seeking asylum in South Africa, but who have been separated from their parents for various reasons.
The children – aged from six to 16 – may now for the first time enter South Africa’s education system.
Lawyers for Human Rights is running a crowdfunding campaign for stateless children.
Some vulnerable children are required to do DNA tests to get birth certificates, but it costs R1400 - R2100.
Abandoned & orphaned stateless children are required to pay R1350 to apply for a visa allowing them to go to school.
